11th June 2010 will mark the first day of the 2010 Football World Cup that is to be hosted in South Africa. The Africans are seeing this as a golden opportunity to showcase Africa to the World, with 5 new stadiums being constructed and others receiving major upgrades, South Africa is working very hard to ensure that the 2010 World Cup will be a great one.
Host Cities
For the 2010 World Cup there will be a total of 9 host cities.
Cape Town - The newly constructed Cape Town Stadium in Greenpoint, Cape Town is to be the flagship stadium. Located in Cape Town, which is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and beautiful cities in the world, the stadium itself is in a stunning location as it sits within view of Table Mountain and overlooks Table Bay and famous Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisioned.
Johannesburg - The economic hub of Africa, Jo'burg is a bustling city of contrasts that is spread across the small but densely populated province of Gauteng.
Pretoria - The capital of South Africa, Pretoria is a pretty and quiet city that lies north of Johannesburg in Gauteng.
Durban – The Beach Capital of Africa with the warm Indian Ocean and the city's tropical climate Durban is one of the nicest places to be in the South African winter.
Port Elizabeth – Known as ‘The Friendly City’, Port Elizabeth lies in Nelson Mandela Bay on the windswept Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape Province.
Bloemfontein – A pretty city with thousands of rose bushes and some poignant memorials.
Rustenburg – A tranquil area in North West Province. Rustenburg is one of the world's most heavily mined regions and has a wealth of platinum underground.
Nelspruit - The capital of Mpumalanga province lies in the fertile valley of the Crocodile River, about 330km east of Johannesburg.
Polokwane - The capital of Limpopo province is ideally situated near the border of the wildlife-rich Kruger National Park.
