Stellenbosch is the second-oldest Cape settlement after Cape Town; named after the Cape Governor Simon van der Stel, however it gets its ‘City of Oaks’ nickname from the venerable and exotic 200 year old oak trees that line the streets, planted to provide wood for the wine industry. It is a thriving university town; where many of the viti and viniculturalists are trained as well as it seems many of the country´s top rugby players.
There are easily more than 106 cellars within a 25 kilometre radius of Stellenbosch including the popular Spier Wine Estate that includes a cheetah park and horse riding to name a few activities. Stellenbosch offers both modern and traditional shops as well as arts and crafts that are mostly situated between Merriman Avenue, Bird and Dorp Street. Around Stellenbosch (along its wine routes) you can find many charming country shops and farm stalls that sell traditional South African preserves and offer strawberry picking.
